FTZ News: Bac Ninh Province in northern Vietnam has approved plans for a massive 5,000-hectare free trade zone directly linked to the upcoming Gia Binh International Airport. Designed as a modern, integrated complex, the zone will combine manufacturing, advanced logistics, trade, services, innovation hubs, and the digital economy. Officials see it as a gateway to global markets and a coordinating hub for economic flows in Vietnam’s northern growth region — a key piece of the country’s broader strategy to compete in Asia’s supply chains.

The plan was approved under a resolution adjusting Bac Ninh’s overall provincial master plan for 2021–2030. In addition to the 5,000-hectare free trade zone, the province is also planning a specialized economic zone of roughly 10,000 hectares in the Kép and Lang Giang areas. The project will leverage the North-South economic corridor, the industrial-urban belt around Hanoi, and major transport infrastructure including highways, railways, a border railway station, and the Kép container depot.

At 5,000 hectares (50 square kilometers), the free trade zone ranks among Vietnam’s largest such initiatives. The country is currently expanding its free trade zone network, targeting 6 to 8 zones by 2030 and 8 to 10 internationally competitive zones by 2045. Foreign direct investment into Vietnam has grown strongly in recent years, with manufacturing and logistics accounting for a major share. Direct connectivity to Gia Binh Airport — still under development — is expected to create strong potential for air cargo and passenger handling while significantly cutting transport times for high-value goods.

Analysts view the plan as a strategic response to shifting global supply chains. Vietnam has successfully positioned itself as an attractive alternative to China by combining competitive labor costs, a favorable geographic location, and participation in major trade agreements such as the CPTPP and RCEP. By emphasizing the digital economy and innovation, the Bac Ninh free trade zone moves beyond traditional manufacturing models. This aligns with the Vietnamese government’s push to climb the value chain — shifting from simple assembly toward design, R&D, and digital services.

Key transport infrastructure will play a central role. Connections to the highway network, the North-South railway, and border corridors will improve access to Hanoi, Hai Phong, and Quang Ninh. Gia Binh Airport is expected to function as an air logistics hub, enabling fast movement of electronics, pharmaceuticals, and other high-tech products. Experts estimate the project could generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs while making a meaningful contribution to provincial GDP growth.

Challenges remain. Securing large-scale financing, managing environmental impacts, and attracting high-quality investment will be critical. While Vietnam has a strong track record developing industrial zones, large-scale projects frequently face infrastructure delays. Success will depend on legal reforms, stable incentive policies, and effective public-private partnerships. The government is working to keep the business environment competitive through more flexible licensing procedures and stronger support for technology companies.

Regionally, the initiative intensifies competition with free trade zones in China, India, and other ASEAN countries. Bac Ninh’s northern location near China gives it strong potential for complementary supply-chain industries. Its focus on the digital economy aligns with global Industry 4.0 trends and could attract investment from technology firms, smart logistics providers, and cloud-service companies.

Vietnam’s economy continues to grow steadily as it seeks to diversify beyond textiles and electronics assembly. The Bac Ninh free trade zone could act as a catalyst, drawing capital northward from Hanoi and Hai Phong. Similar zones across Vietnam have already captured a significant share of foreign investment, and this new project may serve as a model for other provinces.

By planning a 5,000-hectare free trade zone connected to Gia Binh Airport, Vietnam is underscoring its commitment to infrastructure-led and knowledge-based development.
