Mozambique approves 64,000-hectare special economic zone near Maputo
FTZ News: Mozambique’s Cabinet on Tuesday, Nov. 3, approved a decree creating a 64,000-hectare special economic zone in Moamba district, Maputo province, government spokesman Inocêncio Impissa said at the press conference following the session.
The zone covers parts of the administrative posts of Moamba-Sede, Pessene and Ressano Garcia. Impissa said it is meant to increase productive and commercial capacity, broaden the tax base, stimulate innovation ecosystems and employment, and generate foreign currency through incentive schemes and simplified procedures.
Under the new regulation for special economic zones, Decree 12/2026, the Cabinet must approve each new zone on a proposal from the minister responsible for the economy. The announcement did not include investment targets or specific projects for the zone.
Earlier, the governments of Mozambique and China signed agreements for projects in Moamba, including a pharmaceutical park and a poultry value chain. Those agreements also refer to a special economic zone in the district. The Cabinet announcement did not say how the two relate.
