Alat Free Zone Airport Set for Spring 2027 Launch
FTZ News: The airport inside the Alat Free Economic Zone ( Azerbaijan ) is supposed to be ready next spring, the zone’s chairman said. APA carried the remarks on Oct. 6. Valeh Alasgarov, chairman of the board, said construction started in April 2024 and should be done by the end of this year. He said the airport would be ready to operate no later than the end of March or the start of April 2027.
The plot is 750 hectares. First-stage cargo capacity is 500,000 tons a year. Alasgarov said that number should climb, in steps, to at least 2 million tons. He said the zone has a deal with Silk Way Airlines, the local cargo carrier, to build the airport and the logistics ground around it. “Perhaps this will be the first airport located within a free economic zone,” he said.
APA gave no manat figure and did not say who is paying for the runway. It named no other carrier. It did not say what happens to Baku’s existing cargo traffic if Alat opens on that date. The “perhaps” is Alasgarov’s. The dates are his timetable. The paper did not say the concrete is already down for a year-end finish./.
