Riga Freeport Will Funnel All Kundziņsala Trucks Onto New Overpass in 2027
FTZ News: A new overpass connecting Tvaika Street to Kundziņsala opens on Nov. 1, and a second port checkpoint goes into service the same day. Until the end of the year, trucks can still use either the new route or the existing checkpoint on Uriekstes Street. Both will run 24 hours a day. On Jan. 1, 2027, the older checkpoint shuts for traffic heading to the island, and every cargo truck will have to use the new overpass.
The port authority says the new connection will improve access to Kundziņsala and reduce heavy-truck traffic on roads closer to central Riga. It is also expected to help military traffic move more easily. Kundziņsala already handles most of the port’s containers. The authority has been seeking additional terminals, logistics operators and energy projects for the island.
The impact on businesses will depend on whether the new route reduces delays and transport costs. The port has not released estimates for either./.
