Falic Group Takes Over Argentina’s La Quiaca Free Zone
FTZ News: La Quiaca’s free zone has a new operator. The notice is thinner than the headline. Jujuy360 reported on Oct. 6 that Falic Group will run and develop the customs site on the northern edge of Jujuy, in the Puna, on the border. The province is selling it as trade, jobs and a restart of a border that has been quiet.
Juan Carlos Abud, the economic development and production minister, said the foreign firm has the experience to drag the provincial economy along. Dante Velázquez, mayor of La Quiaca, said putting companies on the customs lot is a real way to widen what the region makes and sells. JEMSE, the state company, is in the story. The paper does not say what share it keeps, or what Falic is paying.
The list that follows is a work plan, not a contract. In the coming weeks the sides are supposed to set up working tables, call local owners and small operators to agree on how goods get sold, and line up with the province so construction and operating jobs go to local hands. Falic is also supposed to put out a timetable for basic infrastructure and the rules for shops that want in. The write-up ties the site to the Capricorn bioceanic corridor, the road and trade line between Atlantic and Pacific ports.
No tenant is named. No peso figure is given. No construction start is set. Abud’s line about experience is the only reason offered for picking this operator. Until those tables produce a schedule and a list of firms, La Quiaca has a name on the gate and the same lot./.
